Miss Avery came to me at just eight days old. She is cute as a button and slept for almost the entire two hours. It is amazing how shooting a newborn makes me realize how quickly my own little one has grown. They truly change so fast and it makes me so happy to be able to capture these fleeting moments for myself and other parents! I really do ♥ my job!!

Another year has come and gone! Twelve months, 52 weeks, 365 days...it doesn't matter how you break it down, it's gone in the blink of an eye! Having the ability to capture it all is my favorite reason that I'm a photographer. So much has happened this year for me on a personal level that I have found my blog is the recipient of much neglect. I got pregnant and gave birth to baby #3 this year, Macy Jolie. I recently transferred positions at my day job. I, also, lost a very close relative which makes me value each and every photograph that I take all that much more.

On a professional level, I feel that I have really improved and furthered my understanding of many aspects of photography. It is just in looking back through my photos from this year that I noticed this and realized just how far I have come. It is amazing what you fail to see when the change is a gradual one. I have yet to make my list of things I would like to learn and improve upon for 2012, but I know blogging will have to be one of them!! I can only hope that this post will make up for some of my neglect.

Ok, so maybe these days it actually equals married, but how can I blog their wedding without ever blogging some of their engagement pictures first?? These two were so much fun once they warmed up to the camera. Like most sessions, they were a little aprehensive at first, but were totally into it by the end of the session. Don's daughter Asya even joined us for a few photos!

Sound Asleep | Baby Claire

It's every photographer's dream that a beautiful couple show up to the studio with a baby that is sound asleep and remains that way for the next two hours. Lucky for me, Little Claire was all mine to capture. She was great...such a good sleeper throughout the whole session and all of the blanket and pose changes. It didn't hurt that she was also cute as a button!! Look at her lips...gasp!

Let me just preface this by saying I don't really shoot many weddings. I have a full time job and weddings are a TON of work. But, they are so fun and so full of raw emotion! I really enjoy the chances that I do get to shoot weddings.

This particular wedding came about because of my other job. You see, I work with both Kim & Dave. A workplace romance! They are both such great and genuine people...how could I say no? Their wedding was fantastic and you could just see how much they love eachother. You could see their love in everything that they do; their interactions with eachother, their vows that they wrote (pretty awesome vows if you ask me!), and the way they look at eachother. They are what forever is all about! Hope you two enjoyed your pictures!

Happy Mother's Day!

I really thought that with my husband being out of town for business (i.e. across the country in Florida) this Mother's Day I wouldn't really get any wonderful gifts for being a mommy on this special day. Silly me! I got one of the best gifts I have gotten in a while...the participation of my three and four year old (who both hate my camera) for a whopping five minutes or so. Hard to believe, but I even got more than one shot of them together that I really like! This, my friends, is quite feat. These two crazy boys of mine are 13.5 months apart and in the more than three years that they have been brothers I have just a handful of photos of them together. Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms out there! I hope that, like me, you got just what you wanted!

Behind enemy lines...my personal experience with chain store photography!

As a custom photographer, I am compelled to admit that I have stood behind enemy lines. Believe it or not, I have even fired a shot or two.

You may be wondering exactly what I’m talking about. No, I am not a soldier. I am also not in some crazy street gang. I, my friends, once took a job as a chain store photographer. You see, I was at a transitional phase. I had an eight month old baby boy, we had recently moved back to my hometown, AND I was four months pregnant. Being pregnant I knew I didn’t want to go back to a full time job just yet. I merely wanted to get out of the house a little and do some kind of job that I thought would be fun. This is how I started my job as a seasonal chain store photographer.

Now, to get to the point of my post, a lot of people question what the BIG difference is between a chain store photographer and a custom photographer? As someone who has been on both sides of the fence as both a photographer and a patron I wanted to let you all in on my perspective.

The biggest difference is not in price, but in value. The value of the customer, the value of the experience, and the value of the final product.

Let’s start with the value of the customer. When I worked at the chain store I usually worked a four hour shift. In those four hours I checked in, photographed, prepared photos, worked the sales counter, and ordered photographs for about 6-8 customers. We often ran late, sometimes by hours. We just filtered people in and out. If your kid wasn’t happy for the 15 minutes/20 photographs we were allowed to take you were simply out of luck.

As a custom photographer, I only schedule 1-2 sessions a week. I spend hours on each customer that I have. My time is spent on everything from correspondence, to shooting time, to meticulously editing/retouching, designing, and ordering. I try my hardest to make sure everything is perfect. If your kid is having a horrible day, I will take as much time as I need to get them comfortable and happy. I will even reschedule if it just isn’t going to work for them. This leads into the next point…

The experience. At a chain studio it goes something like this…You walk in, the ‘photographers’ are running late, you take a seat in the much too warm lobby. Your children were happy when you arrived, but by the time you get called back they are hungry and cranky. They spend their fifteen minutes photographing your children before they move you to the sales table. At the sales table it doesn't matter what you want or need. They don’t give up until they have sold you their largest package at retail price which happens to be 15x the price of that little coupon you got in the mail. What on earth are you going to do with 12 sheets of wallets?

With a custom photographer, the process is much more seamless. You arrive to your appointment and your photographer is ready. They devote the next hour or two making sure they captured your child and their true personality. After the session, you get to go home and rest while your photographer makes sure every photo is perfect. That drool running down Little Johnny’s chin surely ruined the photo with that perfect smile, right? Wrong. With a custom photographer they take the time to edit that out of your picture. It’s like it was never there. Your portrait is perfect!

Of course that brings us to the last and surely most important point...the final product. What do you walk away with?

I am going to let the pictures do the talking here. My apples to apples comparison: a two week old baby in Mommy’s hands on a black backdrop. On the left is my very own little guy taken at the chain store studio where I once worked. On the right is my very own creation as a custom photographer. For the record, I paid $15.98 ($7.99 for the portrait sheet and another $7.99 for them to hit two buttons titled 'sepia' and 'vignette') for an 8x10 of that picture on the left. So, which option is the true value? That is for you to decide.

Oh my! I can't believe how long it has been since I have done a blog post! Very, very bad blogger. The good news, I haven't been spending nearly as much time online since I found out I was pregnant?!? SAY WHAT??? Yep, I am pregnant with our third child. It has caused me to refocus just a little for the last couple of months. I have been drained of all extra energy and have spent all my spare time with my little men! I just can't hack staying up until midnight these days to blog! Worry not though, clients have not been neglected, they just haven't been blogged about...oops! I'm a little late on blogging this as Baby Corben is now month old! Turn around twice and he'll be driving! :P Corben is the son of one of my MANY cousins. He is baby #3 for her and her first boy. I was so excited to photograph him. Little Corben was amazing to photograph! He slept like a champ and was pretty willing to let me pose him (as long as he didn't have to be on his belly!). Hamer Family!!

I had the pleasure of shooting the Hamer Family shortly before Christmas. There were two families that I was predominantly shooting with Grandpa joining us for a few shots. I have to admit that I wasn't sure what to expect going into this...three young boys!!! As the mother of two young boys myself, I was prepared for anything. Would I get any shots? Would they smile or even look at me?? Boy was I suprised when they were just perfect to shoot!! I even thought about borrowing the two year old so he could give my little guys lessons on what to do when mommy breaks out the camera!!

Welcome Baby Kamdyn!

I was so excited to be able to photography Baby Kamdyn. Not only is he just way too cute, but he is the baby of my childhood bestfriend. The bestfriend that was born just two days before me, the one that used to wear matching outfits to kinergarten with me, and the best friend who also shares my middle name. I have so many wonderful memories from growing up with her. I hope that my kids have bestfriends like her. This is baby number three for her and her last baby. One of the biggest benefits to being a photographer is being able to capture shots for yourself and those that you love. I purchased new studio lights recently and my so my sister was the beneficiery of a couple new shots of her daughters. My boys also got to pose for a few...if you can call it that. Here they are...

Most seniors around here wait to get their senior pictures taken until spring. They don't know what they are missing out on!! The fall colors are gorgeous and make an awesome backdrop for photos. Anna was one to go against the grain. She was a little camera shy at first, but I got her to warm up by the end of the session and had a great time taking her pictures. Hope you love them Anna!!

The "J" Family...

oops, was advertising them as the "S" family on my Facebook page. I must've been tired when I posted that. The "J" Family (yep, I got it right this time!) was tons of fun. These two beautiful babies are cousins. Their daddies, one of which couldn't make it to the shoot (shoutout to Megan's hubby, Byron!) are only thirteen months apart and the brothers timed it awesomely by both welcoming their little bundles of joy only two months apart. Sounds like fun, huh?!? I am always so pumped when I hear about brothers that are that close in age growing up and sharing experiences together! It gives me hope that some day my boys' definition of quality time will be something other than a toddler version of the WWF Friday Night Smackdown! Hope you enjoy your pictures...

How fun to shoot my first senior rep this year!! This is Garrett. He is a senior at CRHS this year. He is a fun, easy-going, outdoorsy (is that a word?) kind of guy. I had fun talking to him and we even share a common interest. We both enjoy riding our four-wheelers. Of course I'm going to bet he is a much better rider than me. My reasoning: not only does he have a four-wheeler, but he has a dirt bike. I'm pretty sure I would be hospitalized if you let me drive something with only two wheels!! I need all four wheels for extra stability...seriously! :)

And I must say the 13 year old me would have been SOOOO jealous of this birthday party. WOW!! What a gorgeous baby! I've been hearing about Cora on an almost daily basis since her mommy became pregnant with her...and nope, I don't even know her mom. Let's just say I work with one proud Grandma! Baby Cora and her parents don't live in town so I didn't think I would have the opportunity to photography her, but I got lucky! They were in town for the weekend! Baby Cora was a doll and so alert. She didn't really sleep the whole session...the picture below...yep, I'm pretty sure it was just a blink. Shhhhhh....don't tell!

Gone Fishing!!!

I love to spend time outdoors with my family!! We try to frequent parks, boat, camp, go for walks, and ride our fourwheelers as often as possible. My boys would much prefer to be outside and I hope that it remains that way as they grow up....I love that they have such a healthy relationship with Mother Nature! All of this talk and it may come as a suprise to you that my boys had NEVER been fishing prior to today!! Crazy, right?!?

They were so excited last night when they got their matching Buzz Lightyear fishing poles. They practiced casting and the backyard and caught eachother several times...oh the joy!! I can't tell you how many times I untangled their fishing line. So, after much hype last night, we took them down to the lake today. They had a blast!! Of course we didn't catch anything...they were thrilled to just cast it and reel it back in over and over and over! Oh to be young again!!

My other other job!! Hello Jake Owen....

Ok, so it's been a month since I took a week off of my day job at the local hospital and my photography business to work an eighty hour week as an assistant event coordinator for the Cowlitz County Fair. I have finally recovered! It was my eighth fair and we joke that it is a little like childbirth! About this time of year, you forget how exhausting and crazy it was...then by the time March rolls around, you are completely oblivious!! That's when I will get the phone call, "Hey Catrina, fair 2011?"

Of course, I will oblige. It is a TON of work, but it is such a fun & great change of pace from my normal routine!! I mean, seriously, why would I not want to get paid to go work at the fair?!? Concert...check, rodeo (and of course, that means cowboys)...check, demo derby...check!! Count me in! Of course I am one of those insane people that completely thrive in a fast-paced, chaotic environment!

It is so busy during that week that as much as I would love to capture some of the photo ops, I almost never have time! This year, there was a small little exception. I got to break out my camera at the Jake Owen Concert!! I'll be honest with you, I had never heard any of Jake's songs (sorry country fans!). I had, though, seen his posters on the fair website and around town...and he was gorgeous, so no complaints here! The concert was totally worth it...I am now a Jake Owen fan! He had such a great presence and was so engaging with the fans that you couldn't help but have a blast! Here's some of the pictures...

Then, after making love to my camera, he made his way to the audience to greet the rest of his fans! And I want you to keep an eye on these next few pictures. I was under the impression that he was a total ladies man...but apparently he is a man's man too!! Check out how excited his mans (man fans) were!!!

And when I say on stage, I mean on top of the stage too!! Hey Jake, you're not supposed to be up there!!!

Seriously, an awesome performer! He stayed and signed every last persons autograph....he worked later than I did that night!!

The wedding was beautiful!! It was such a joy to experience a ceremony/reception that was so rich in culture!

naughty me!! Holy moly, have I been busy. Just last week I worked over 80 hours! Time to buckle down and throw up a few sneak peeks. If you "like" me on Facebook, chances are you've probably already seen these...at least I'm keeping up somewhere, huh?

Alright, here's a couple sneak peeks. I will work on blogging more of these sessions as I finish them up!

Here's Gavin! He is a doll! His mommy won my FB fan contest and won a free session and some prints. I hope she loves these pictures, but how can you go wrong when he is THIS cute?!?

And, WOW! A couple things about this session. I totally commend the parents. They were so awesome...I don't know that I could handle three babies at once. That is a lot of work!! It was like rapid fire just to keep paci's in their mouths to get them to sleep! They were all three so adorable! Super cool that they all had their own little personalities too. Thanks Mom and Dad...this was probably a once in a lifetime thing to be lucky enough to photograph newborn triplets!!

And last, but most definitely not least...Baby Mia! She was super gorgeous, as were her mommy and big sisters. I was supposed to shoot her mommy's maternity session a few weekends ago, but it got cancelled due to Baby Mia's early appearance. Would've loved to shoot the maternity pictures too, but ya know, some babies just have a mind of their own!! :)

Baby Adam is Three Months!

So hard to believe! Three months is a hard age to photograph! They are not able to sit or do many things for that matter, but they are not quite as content just laying there like a newborn. The fun thing is their ability to make all kinds of new facial expressions.

Say that three times quickly! This shoot was of two sisters, both seniors. Not twins, just really close in age...just like my boys. Also like my rugrats was the fact that these two were so different. Both were great and a joy to shoot! Hope you like these girls!

We will be having my boys' birthday party this weekend so it just seemed like the right time to try to get a few good photos of them. My oldest just turned three and my youngest will be two in a couple of weeks. They suffer from a severe case of PKS (Photographer's Kid Syndrome) and are usually pretty non-cooperative. Valentine's Day is right around the corner and what better gift to give your spouse than yourself! I was so excited to be able to shoot these photos for Cynthia. She just got married last March and then her and her husband had a baby this December. Can you believe she just had a baby? She is one hot mama!!

So, I had the joy of meeting and taking pictures of Baby Emmah yesterday. She was only seven days old. Her mom is a family friend that I've known my whole life. Once Baby Emmah fell asleep she was a dream to photograph. She didn't mind being naked and let me move her around quite a bit, what a little trooper! Here's Baby Emmah...

Yesterday I got the privelage of shooting my cousins five day old baby boy. Baby Adam wasn't much for sleep. He is a pretty active little guy! He is absolutely adorable and I am very happy for her and her husband. Congrats Cynthia & Aaron!

I love the holidays! I am especially excited for Christmas this year. I have this feeling that Santa is going to be bringing me some great gifts this year. Maybe a lens or two and the bamboo mat that I have really been wanting. Yay! I am also excited for our move in the near future. My parents just had the house of their dreams built, so we will be renting my childhood home. There is a huge bonus room in the garage that is completely finished and has a good amount of natural light. It will be my studio. There is so much to look forward to in the next month or two. I will be sure to keep you posted!

First of all, let me say thank you for visiting my site. I have been thinking about starting a blog for a while now, so I am excited to be writing my very first post. Photography has been a passion of mine for quite some time. Having children really just emphasized my desire to be able to take great photographs. Being able to capture all the important moments in their life is a huge deal. Currently, I am working on bettering my skills as a photographer so that one of these days I can take YOUR photos!
